At VVU, badges replace traditional grades, helping learners develop real-world habits like delivering excellent work on time and tracking verified accomplishments.

Why Badges Matter

  1. Learners Drive Learning:
    • Badges allow learners to progress through work at their own pace.
    • They coordinate teamwork and track real-world achievements in Middle School and Launchpad.
  2. Accountability for Excellence:
    • The badge approval process empowers learners to judge the quality of their studio mates’ work.
    • It provides a clear way for learners and parents to monitor progress.
  3. Proof of Mastery:
    • Badges can be included in portfolios to secure apprenticeships or first jobs.
    • They can be translated into traditional transcripts for college admissions.

Badges by Studio

Spark Studio

  • Badges are not needed in Spark Studio (we introduce some early ones focused on Social-Emotional skills).
  • Focus: Developing basic skills and learning to collaborate in a nurturing environment.
  • Progress is tracked task by task during Spark Play and Hard Work, with no proof of completion required.

Elementary Studio

  • Badges play a limited role, but are built upon what they started in Spark Studio for Social-Emotional skills, reading, and math
  • Focus: Combining real work with challenging games, where winning a game often signifies mastery.
  • Badges are typically earned only in Core Skills. Proof of excellent writing may be needed to enter Middle School.

Middle School

  • Badges become central to marking progress.
  • Focus: Deliberate practice and excellent work, preparing learners for real-world tasks like apprenticeships.

How Parents Can Support the Badge System

  1. Encourage Independence: Allow learners to take charge of their own progress.
  2. Celebrate Milestones: Recognize badges earned as proof of growth and mastery.
  3. Monitor Progress: Use badges to understand your learner’s achievements and readiness for future challenges.

Badges ensure that learning is personalized, progress is visible, and achievements are meaningful.
