When our VVU learners spent the morning at our local Community Market, they not only donated 206 pounds of food, but also helped stock the shelves in preparation for the afternoon shoppers. During our time there, we learned that 4,000 people visit the market each week. We also discovered that the market rescues 500,000 pounds of food from local stores—food that would have otherwise ended up in the trash. This experience not only allowed us to give back but also deepened our understanding of the market’s critical role in reducing food waste and supporting the community.
How does building our community support our learning?

For example, if students are working on a project about environmental sustainability, local environmental organizations or businesses can provide real-world insight, resources, or even field trips.
